In 2016 we planted our first 1200 lavender plants... this was three times as many as we expected to plant! We just wanted something that would look nice, be firewise, grow well with almost no water, and get the snakes away from our house so our kids could more safely play outside. You notice nowhere on the list did it say we were planning to be lavender farmers!

 

As I was crawling across the ground digging holes to place about the 600th plant in the ground, my husband and I looked at each other and both had the same crazy thought... we should farm this! We both have backgrounds with animal agriculture and have actually been teaching agriscience for many years but neither of us had operated a full fledged farm.

 

So, that was when our farming adventure began. Over the last 4 seasons we have added about 1500 more plants and now grow 5 varieties of lavender. We will be adding a 6th to the roster this season! I say we kind of fell into farming, but I have found I really, really enjoy it.

We have met all of our original goals as well as a few more along the way. I've got the farming down, now our goal is for you to enjoy our lovely lavender!
